The Darkness is Coming

The silence may be echoing in the long, dark, halls, but rest assured they are all but abandoned.

Work has been slow on The Miscreant for a while, but any work, even if it’s just thinking about the story, is still work and counts towards progress.

Sometimes, in order to move forward, we must step back for a moment and look into the past. For me, this means moving back to the year 2365 when Khell was born, and getting into his head.

Because, what makes a sweet lonely little boy turn into a charismatic cult leader, who then murders countless people? People don’t just turn evil for the sake of it, so I realised it’s time to delve into Khell’s past and finish off his story.

I never wanted to get inside Khell’s head. I never wanted to know him outside of being the Big Bad. I wanted him to just be an evil being doing evil shit. But to have a generic Big Bad is bad, and I previously received feedback from a reader that I’d fallen into that Big Bad trap.

And so my current project is writing Khell’s personal journal from the age of 12. I toyed with few different writing styles but none of them felt like they fit him. He would not narrate a first person story, like “…and so I stabbed him, because why not?” it just wouldn’t make sense. A journal, though, will hold his deepest darkest secrets, show him in his most vulnerable moments, and depict his rise through the years

Will this be published? At this stage, I have no idea. Parts of it may be used in The Final Realm to tie the story together, but right now it’s a bit too soon to know. Heck, I need to write the damn thing first.

Besides drawing the maps for book 3, the final thing to do will be a yet another touch-up of The Lowest Realm and The Darkest Realm, which may be fresh new editions. This will ensure there’s no plot holes or anything that shouldn’t be there.
